Hadith narrated by Abdullah ibn Umar
A neighbourhood association, active since 2016
The non-profit association (ASBL) Espace Multiculturel de Prés-Javais (EMPJ) works in Verviers for the personal development of the neighbourhood's residents. It runs Assalam Mosque.
Language courses, homework school, training, intercultural meetings and civic action: the association focuses on education, culture, sport and integration.
A new team since May 2023
It took over the running of the association with four clear goals:
- Support social and professional integration by learning French.
- Promote academic success and the development of young people's socio-cultural skills.

A new building for the mosque, the school and the neighbourhood
Our current premises are too small and run down. On 13 December 2023, the association bought a building of about 260 m² on Rue Courte, to be completely renovated. The plans have been finalised with an architect and the permit has been granted.

What we want to do there
- Provide a dignified place of worship for the Muslim community, accessible to people with reduced mobility.
- Create educational, cultural and sports spaces: classrooms, library, multipurpose hall, cafeteria.
- Promote active citizenship, social cohesion and living together.
- Offer social services: mediation, administrative help, homework support.
Why it is urgent
- Run-down premises, rented temporarily, with no guarantee of permanence.
- Upkeep done by our members, often at the expense of safety standards.
- A constantly growing community: the current spaces are no longer enough.
This project is also a lasting legacy for our children: a sadaqa jariya.
The place will be open to all and will work with the other organisations in the neighbourhood: the neighbourhood committee, schools, shopkeepers. We want a resource and service centre for all residents.
Let's build the house of Allah together.
The renovation is estimated at €500,000. Every gift is a sadaqa jariya, a charity that keeps on giving.
